Frostproof Art League and Gallery Newsletter

June 2010

The Student Art Show in April contained an impressive collection of art created by gifted young people and I hope you all made time to see it. If you missed it, you can check out photos in the Gallery scrapbook. Each year we are thankful for enthusiastic art teachers such as Sara Chambers at Frostproof High School and Ed Gesserick at the elementary school for the work they are doing. This year for the first time we awarded ribbons to middle and elementary students also, and it will be fun watching these children improve over the years and eventually display in the High School group. The ArtAfterSchool class headed up by Martha Neher also had a separate display and awards were given there also. Encouraging children in the arts is an important issue at the Gallery, and whenever you have art materials that you no longer use, please remember us and donate, and in that way you can be a part of the children’s art program. You may also see art materials for very low prices at yard sales and that would be another way you could help.

Thanks go to Diana Biehl who worked so hard to make this exhibit a success. Unless you have witnessed the process, you cannot imagine the amount of effort that is required to make this event happen each year.

FROM THE GALLERY DIRECTOR

Gallery Director, Marilyn Fuller, would like to remind us about the policy of rotating art work after two months and replace with something different. Also it is essential that artwork on display is original work. If it is not, please make sure to label it “copy of original work by______. She also asks that each of us bring in two or three things to help fill up the walls until the winter people return. The Gallery looks great and all the credit goes to Marilyn who is working diligently to make it better than ever. She still is requesting Florida landscapes and other Florida art this summer, so if you have any to display please bring it in.

Marilyn asks that you begin to think of crafts and decorative art pieces for a special display she is planning for July-September. The theme is: Crafts, Crafts, and More Crafts Please bring these items to the Gallery the last week of June.

Also much gratitude to Jerry Fuller for building the desperately needed shelves in the storeroom, and also for extending the display ledge on the east wall.

TOM FREEMAN LECTURES AT CIRCLE B BAR RESERVE

Tom will be conducting a series of interesting and informative lectures at the reserve on the following dates:

June 17th at 5 p.m.: Hamilton Disston who invented the hand saw and his powerful influence on the development of Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee area of Florida

June 19th at 10 a.m.: Re channeling the Kissimmee River and how it affected Florida

June 26th at 10 a.m.: Kissimmee River Valley

Tom, and Gallery member Jackie Palomaki also have an exhibit of more than 30 Florida landscape paintings at the reserve in the Nature Discovery Center throughout the month of June. The reserve is located at 4399 Winter Lake Road in Lakeland. Telephone: 668-4673

The Quarterly Members Meeting and Potluck Dinner and Dance held on Saturday May 1st. was great fun for about the 20 or so members who attended, and the food was great as usual.

Fran Byrne would like to teach a class on Sculpting Clay Animals in the fall. For more information you may search her website: clayanimals.com. If you would be interested in this class, please call the Gallery so that we can determine interest. This project will be fired in the kiln, and Fran says it is easy and anyone can achieve good results. If this class takes place, we will need a slab roller. If you would be willing to loan one to us, please call.

Kay Hutzelman as decided on a theme for next years Wearable Art Show. It will be You’ve Come a Long Way Baby and will celebrate the powerful spirit of women. All members are encouraged to begin thinking about this in regard to what you can create for the show.

Kay, Martha and Gayle are working hard planning for the Kids Arts Camp next month. The dates for this are July 27-29. The theme this year is People Indigenous to Frostproof, particularly the Caloosa Indians. To sign up a child, call the Gallery soon, because classes are filling fast. Many volunteers are needed for this, and if you are available, please call the Gallery.

In August, Gallery member Diana Biehl is opening her beautiful lakefront home to anyone who would like to join a 4 week, informal, group taught watercolor workshop there. We will be painting fabulous lakeside views from inside in comfort and specifies watercolor only.

Our next Quarterly Members Meeting and Potluck Dinner is tentatively scheduled for September 26. The last one of the year will be on December 12. We plan an ornament exchange for that meeting and we will remind you again as the time approaches.

On October 23rd, Frostproof will again be presenting a day of fun at the Depot. This event last year was a huge success with the dog contests and assorted vendors present. Added this year will be bicycle related events as well as a Heritage Day celebration featuring craftsmen and activities honoring the early pioneers in the area. The Chamber of Commerce is now accepting design ideas for a t-shirt to be sold that day, and anyone interested in submitting a design has until the end of June to bring their idea to the Chamber. The working title at this time is Barks and Bicycles, and the t-shirt image should reflect that theme.

A calendar of upcoming events is always available at the Gallery.

As a last note, we again extend sincere gratitude to Chip Newton and Mike Thornton for all they do to get the Gallery activities and events into the newspapers. Publicity is better than at any time in Gallery history.
